Well, what’s new in the world of speaking?  When it comes to speaking for profit, the core fundamentals remain unchanged. Superior credibility, believable social proof, entertaining stories that further the sale, a mouth watering offer, etc. are vital to every talk. But here’s what’s changed: the mindset of your audience. Any one speaking to make money, from stage and even webinars, needs to understand the shift taking place in the minds of the consumer. What worked in the past won’t fly in today’s marketplace.

Those experiencing lower conversions and sales are most likely using out of date techniques and strategies. Consumers are savvy now and can see yesterday’s sales tactics from a mile away. There exists a new formula for profitable speaking in today’s marketplace. Those that understand this new way of selling stand to gain higher closing percentages, more invitations to speak and increased profits.

SpeakerMatch is the brainchild of Bryan Caplovitz, a former business technology consultant. In trying to build market share for his consulting firm, Bryan saw the need for somewhere non-professional speakers could find speaking opportunities. As it became clear that organizations had trouble finding speakers as well, he knew there was a great opportunity to fill a need. He saw the internet as an ideal way to bring speakers and opportunities together, and the company was born.

Jason Hartman talks with author, editor and literary coach, Ariel Gore. Some call her The Indiana Jones of literature” and her books include Bluebird: On Women and Happiness (forthcoming from Farrar, Straus and Giroux), the critically acclaimed writing guide How to Become a Famous Writer Before You’re Dead, the Booksense pick novel The Traveling Death and Resurrection Show, the Oregon Book Award finalist Atlas of the Human Heart, and cult classic The Hip Mama Survival Guide.

She founded the award-winning parenting zine Hip Mama back in 1993. Over the years, the zine featured many new and emerging writers. Still, The New Yorker raved: Gore’s the quality of the writing that sets Hip Mama apart. Ariel now serves as Hip Mama’s consulting editor. The Utne Reader said, Ariel Gore’s transformation from globetrotting teenager to the hippest of mamas reads like a movie script about a Gen-X slacker following her bliss to unlikely success.

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ariel ran away from high school at age 16 to become an international bag lady. She rambled back home a few years later as a new teen mom. She earned her BA in communications from Mills college and her Master’s degree in journalism from UC Berkeley. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

Jason Hartman talks with self-publishing guru Dan Poynter who spent eight years researching a labor of love. Realizing no publisher would be interested in a technical treatise on the parachute, he went directly to a printer and self-published. The orders poured in and he suddenly found he was a publisher himself. In 1973, Dan became interested in a new aviation sport, couldn’t find a book on the subject so he sat down and wrote one. After four months of writing and intense research that took him from coast to coast, he delivered the manuscript to the printer. So far, Hang Gliding has sold over 130,000 copies-a best seller!

Continuing to write, Dan has produced more than 76 books and revisions so far, of which some have been translated into Spanish, Japanese, Russian, British-English and German. Over the years, Dan has developed a system of writing that makes it all so easy and fun. His books are loaded with facts and figures and contain detailed inside information. They are always up-to-date because he revises them before going back to press. Dan has sold millions of his books, including several best sellers, for ten of millions of dollars in sales. Many of his books sell at the rate of 10-20,000 copies per year, every year.

For many years, Dan ran Para Publishing all by himself. In fact, he was often billed as the world’s largest one-person publishing company. As a one-man show, an author/publisher who handled all the writing, publishing and promotion, office management and shipping himself, Dan is in the best position to advise a first time self-publishing author who is on a limited budget. Today, Dan has staff, a number of products and services (books, reports, tapes, disks, seminars, etc.) and a large suite of offices with a 360 view of the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
